Durable solutions to prevent the migration of young Somalis

Most of the Somali population aged between 18 and 40 who cannot find employment or establish a business in Somalia plans to migrate abroad. The overall aim of this project is to train would-be migrants in the establishment and management of business start-ups in Somalia.

Project objectives and activities

The overall project objective is to reduce the number of young Somalis planning to migrate abroad by helping them acquire new skills and achieve self-reliance in Somalia.

The project will develop four key activities :

1. A poverty assessment among selected Somali households 2. A selection of project beneficiaries 3. Provision of training in Business Planning skills in micro-enterprises and in agriculture 4. Provision of conditional grants for the establishment of 100 start-ups

The main project outcomes will include :

– A reduction in the number of young Somalis attempting to migrate abroad, often at the risk of their lives through the use of human smugglers – Acquisition of new skills in business creation and management – Start-up seed funding for 100 participants

The Somali Human Rights Association (SOHRA) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental, independent human rights and humanitarian organization that was founded on 8 April 2002 in Mogadishu, Somalia.   Since 2006, SOHRA has enjoyed partnership agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The aim of the UNHCR Partnership is to improve the living conditions and to enhance the protection of IDPs, refugees and returnees in Somalia through the development of a countrywide protection monitoring network, advocacy mechanisms, and a referral system through Emergency responses.
